How do I prepare before an acupuncture treatment?

  • Please wear loose fitting clothing and have something to eat approximately one hour before your appointment.

  • All new patients are asked to complete a patient information form and health history. This questionnaire will include questions about your medical history, your family’s medical history, and your lifestyle.  Please bring a list of all medications and/or supplements you are currently taking, and whenever possible bring any copies of previous medical records and lab results.

  • Arrive 15-20 minutes early to your first visit in order to allow time for paperwork.

  • Your acupuncturist may prescribe herbs or supplements or offer you nutritional or lifestyle recommendations.  It is important to comply with all such recommendations. Much of health and wellness depends on your own commitment to yourself and your well-being.

What is acupuncture?  Does it hurt?

  • Acupuncture consists of the gentle insertion and stimulation of thin, disposable, and sterile needles at strategic points near the surface of the body.

  • Although acupuncture is not sensation free, what patients feel is far from pain.  You may experience a mild warming, pulsating, tingling or gentle aching around the needle.  These are the sensations of the activation of qi or the body’s healing energies, and while many acupuncture patients are initially wary of the claim that acupuncture doesn’t hurt, they soon discover that the experience is quite pleasurable.

How many treatments will I need?

  • Most health problems take more than one treatment to resolve.  We generally recommend a course of six treatments before reassessment.

  • Some problems may require ten or more treatments before significant benefits accrue. Your acupuncturist may recommend greater frequency of treatments initially.  This often boosts effectiveness making fewer treatments necessary over the course of care.

  • As your main complaint improves, you should also see an overall improvement in your general health.
